Sensitive vs Sensitized Skin: Learn the Difference

sensitive skin

Is your skin frequently red and blotchy? What’s behind your extreme skin sensitivity? Is your skin truly sensitive… or just temporarily sensitized? Let’s find out:

Both ‘sensitive’ and ‘sensitized’ skin can display redness, dehydration, inflammation and itching,  However, methods of treatment are different for each.  Before you opt for extensive skin treatment, it is important to discover the true reasons behind your ‘skin sensitivity’, in order to reap long-term benefits.

What is Sensitive Skin?

Your genetic makeup decides whether you have sensitive skin. In Ayurveda, this type of skin imbalance is known as ‘Pitta Dosha’.

Pitta skin is prone to breakouts, redness, freckles, and allergy. The skin texture can be medium to thin, easily irritated with medium pore-size, and has a soft luster. The skin problems usually become aggravated in hot or extreme weather conditions. Rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema are some examples of the physical manifestations of genetically-determined sensitive skin.

If you have sensitive skin, the symptoms will appear throughout life, and only proper management and support will soothe and provide that extra protection your skin lacks.

What is Sensitized Skin?

Sensitized skin is a result of a temporarily injured skin barrier. This can be triggered in anyone, irrespective of genes. The reasons behind this can be exposure to environmental/seasonal allergens, certain chemicals, over-exfoliation, sun, dehydration, or even intrinsic factors such as physical & emotional stress, smoking, and other lifestyle choices.

Managing Sensitive Skin

For long-term management and treating the symptoms at their source, use:

With dedicated adherence to this regimen, your skin health will gradually improve. You will experience fewer breakouts, and results can be experienced in less than 4 weeks.

Calming Sensitized Skin

It”s important to understand the source of sensitivity in order to calm  sensitized skin. If sensitivity seems due to a certain chemical, using any product that contains it should be immediately discarded.  This is why we  recommend a 24-hour patch test before applying anything new to your skin. If you have a thin barrier or a compromised acid mantle, then your entire skin care line should always be gentle and pH balanced.

Going back to basic skin care is the best way to calm sensitized skin. For immediate relief from redness and itching (especially, that caused by sunburn), first, cleanser your face with any of our Natural Cleansers. Follow-up by misting with one of our calming Organic Hydrator/Toner (dosha-specific).

Made with sustainably wildcrafted ingredients like Comfrey, Aloe Vera, Ginkgo, Gotu Kola, Peppermint, and various other botanicals and naturally occurring vitamins, these formulas balance skin, reduces redness, and provide deep down moisturization for rapid results.

Once the skin has calmed down, you may apply a moisturizer or one of our serums of choice. If sensitization persists, call a dermatologist/esthetician to find the cause of your skin issue.

To  minimize the risk of sensitivity, be sure to choose products that are free of chemicals, parabens, alcohol and synthetics, artificial fragrances, colors, and dyes.
