With summer winding down, we think it’s important to remember that sunscreen is not just for summertime! Protecting your skin from the destructive forces of UV radiation needs to be priority one, regardless of the season. And with fall and winter coming along soon, moisturizing and hydrating your skin is also incredibly important to ward off the signs of aging. We get asked frequently whether to use moisturizer or sunscreen first, so here is our guide to using both of these important products in your skin care regimen.
MOISTURIZER OR SUNSCREEN FIRST?
This one is easy! Applying suncreen last over top of your other products, not only provides a UV barrier or shield on your skin, but also locks in moisture. Our recommendation is to use our SunProtect SPF30+ as the final step in your morning regimen, after applying your favorite Hydrator, BioScience Peptide Serum and followup moisturizing oil such as our Collagen Boost Serum, which will keep your skin hydrated and supple. SunProtect SPF30+ is chock full of our in-house steam distilled Ayurvedic botanical skin actives and nutrients, concentrated essential oils and is based in nourishing Shea butter. This means it’s not just about blocking UV rays, it is also incredibly dense in powerful, healing, anti-aging antioxidant ingredients.
WHY SUNSCREEN IS SO IMPORTANT
UV rays, both UVA and UVB are the primary culprits in the premature aging of the skin. This means thinning, loose, crepey, sagging skin, wrinkles and fine lines and hyperpigmentation or dark spots. This is primarily due to the breakdown of essential collagen from free radical production. If that’s not enough, skipping the sunscreen can lead to skin cancer from unprotected exposure to the sun. All dermatologists recommend sunscreen as THE most important element in your skin care regimen. We also advise staying out of the sun completely if possible from 10 am to 2 pm, and the wearing of protective clothing such as hats, glasses and rash guards.
PROPER SUNSCREEN USE
We were shocked to learn that 9 out of 10 people do not use sunscreen properly and only 25% get complete coverage with their product of choice before getting in the sun! Correct usage is about 1 teaspoon for your face and about 1 oz (or a shotglass sized amount) of product for your body. The most commonly burned areas of the face and body due to incorrect sunscreen application is around the eyes, the temples and around the lips and hairline, as well as the scalp (part) tops of feet and missed areas of the back.
MULTITASK WITH OUR SUNPROTECT SPF30+
You can make your daily routine a bit simpler, esp. in the summer with more skin exposed, by simply using SUNPROTECT SPF30+ as a daily moisturizer. Unlike most Zinc Oxide barrier protection, SunProtect rubs in as easily as your moisturizer, (but is NOT nano-particulated) smells great, and does not leave any kind of ghostly sheen on the skin. And SunProtect contains a anti-hyperpigmentation or a natural hydroquinone alternative skin brightening formula that we call ‘Deva-Bright’, which is a combination of the best botanicals for dark spots available, Uva Ursi, Kojic Acid (from mushrooms), and licorice root.
