What is Sustainable Skin Care?

sustainable skin care

Opting for sustainable skin care can be a personal or ethical choice. However, with rising awareness over the past few years, consumers are gradually becoming more environmentally conscious, as they gain understanding of the importance of choosing sustainable clean skin care products and practices.

If you’re thinking about joining the  clean beauty revolution, here’s everything you need to know about sustainable skin care:

Demystifying the term ‘Sustainability’

‘Sustainable’ means – ‘making choices that have less impact on the environment and the safety of humans’.

In the easiest terms, a truly sustainable skin care brand should have a low carbon footprint, be gentle yet effective on your skin and have an earth-friendly impact. A product that is sustainable will have all of it’s ingredients sourced ethically from natural organic means and follow environmentally sound  packaging protocols.

However, sustainable is a broad term that comes with a huge checklist. Some brands may follow a number of sustainable practices, however, they might not tick every box. For example, a brand may call itself cruelty-free, but their product may contain beeswax, which also makes them non-vegan and has a higher carbon footprint.

What Makes Skin Care Sustainable?

With a plethora of beauty brands available today, making planet-friendly choices is no longer an easy task. Even when you are trying to follow sustainable skin care practices, misleading promises and marketing practices, with alarming levels of greenwashing in products, can make the net sustainability gain to – near negligible ie; almost none!

By making small changes in your skin care choices, you can make a large difference in environmental impact.  When deciding on products, ask these simple questions:

Is this products natural?

Read the labels thoroughly to  ensure the ingredients are natural and plant-based. Compared to synthetic chemicals, natural and organic ingredients are biodegradable and safe to be used on the skin.

Are the Ingredients Sustainably grown?

Always look for ingredients that are obtained from natural/wild/native habitats.

Note: ‘Since our products contain several Ayurvedic ingredients that are not grown on the US soil, we source them from reputable farmers from remote areas and indigenous local harvesters from all over the world in small batches, while following fair-trade practices. This ensures that the benefits of the ingredients stay intact without exploitation/commercialization of the local habitat.’

Does this product avoid the use of chemicals, pesticides, and GMOs?

One of the important aspects of sustainability is to terminate the use of ingredients that affects human health. Common chemicals in skin care like parabens, mineral oil, oxybenzone, petroleum, silicone, phthalates, formaldehyde, artificial fragrances, and colors, etc.. may not only cause superficial skin damage but may also get absorbed into the bloodstream and cause long-term health issues. Puraveda Organics has zero tolerance for chemicals, pesticides, GMOs or any other ingredient that should not be applied on your skin.

What is the quality of packaging?

A product with expensive visually super attractive packaging may be counting on the packaging to convince you of the products’s inherent value..not generally indicative of whether is will be good for you or the planet. By now we all know that the use of low grade plastic packaging is a very unsafe practice. According to experts, beauty packaging should: have light blocking ability, be BPA-free, be non-reactive to the ingredients inside, and be eco-friendly. Keeping these things in mind, the most suitable packaging options include recyclable Glass and PET (or Polyethylene terephthalate).
