Scalp Buildup – Causes and Treatment

scalp buildup

Do you frequently notice your scalp building up a grimy layer of dirt and/or dandruff? If you are someone (esp. those with oily hair) who often skips a wash day or uses too many products (like dry shampoo and styling gels) – you could be possibly dealing with an easily treatable condition called ‘scalp buildup’.

Scalp buildup can result in bad hair days and hair loss and thinning. Once formed, this buildup isn’t always easy to remove with a commercial detergent shampoo.

Instead, switching to an organic soap-based hair cleanser with healing ingredients like Goldenseal, Thyme, and Rosemary can help de-gunk your follicles and save your hair from serious damage.

Here’s our recommendation on how to remove scalp buildup with truly effective, gentle, dosha-based haircare from Puraveda Organics:

What Causes Scalp Buildup?

Scalp build-up is a result of layers of  hair care product residue, sweat, dirt, skin cells, and environmental pollutants that can form on your scalp over time.

Why Is it Important to Clear Scalp Buildup?

If left unchecked or untreated, scalp buildup will eventually clog or block hair follicles, causing hair loss. It can also cause infection and inflammation of the follicles (technically, known as – Folliculitis).

Severe folliculitis may also cause crusty sores which are often difficult to heal. The latter can cause scarring and permanent hair loss.

Cleaning Scalp Buildup with Puraveda Organics

Scalp buildup can be broadly divided into two segments:

  • Natural Buildup, and
  • Product Buildup

If you are using too many products, especially chemical/sulfate-based shampoos or dry shampoos, the obvious first step should be to stop using them and opt for a clean hair care regimen.

To address issues with this build-up, the following products are recommended according to different Hair Doshas (or imbalances):

For Normal to Dry Scalp or Vata Hair Dosha

If you have a normal or dry scalp or are facing issues like dandruff or a flaky scalp, consider washing your hair 2-3X times a week with Puraveda Revitalizing Shampoo (concentrating on the scalp). The Revitalizing line is designed to restore oil and moisture balance to the scalp while keeping your hair clean and full of bounce without harsh synthetic chemicals.

Follow with our Revitalizing Conditioner on the lower 2/3 lengths for ~3 minutes and rinse.

For Oily Scalp or KaphaHair Dosha

For an oily scalp, use PVO’s Volumizing Shampoo 3-4X times a week. Infused with ingredients like Sesame Oil, Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Grapeseed Oil, etc., our Volumizing Shampoo with African Black Soap as the base (ie;  sulfate-free) removes excess grease and dirt, while also restoring volume & shine to your thin and limp hair naturally.

Follow by applying Volumizing Conditioner to the lower 2/3 of the shafts to restore nourishment, and rinse.

For Sensitive/ Inflamed Scalp or Pitta Hair Dosha

Our Everyday and Clarifying Hair Care line are the recommended products for persons with Sensitive/ Inflamed scalps. These gentle formulas can also be used for Normal hair. Both formulas are sulfate-free and aim at restoring a clean scalp along with strong, healthy, glossy hair.

Use any of the formulas 2-3X times a week to remove synthetic product build-up and eliminate hard water residue.

Follow with Everyday Conditioner to nourish the strands and also eliminate split ends and frizz.

All our hair care lines are unisex, suitable for all age groups, and textures (great for Curly girls too!) organic or sustainably wildcrafted in their natural habitats (not all ayurvedic botanicals can be commercially grown under USDA organic standards and must be obtained in their native growing conditions) ingredients, and free from petroleum, sulfates, silicones, dyes, perfumes, parabens, and other synthetic/ toxic chemicals.

If you love styling, do not forget to try our  Puraveda Leave-in Styling Gel which gives salon-quality results, without causing residue buildup. Since the formulas are concentrated, a little will go a long way! Please note that our shampoos do NOT foam a great deal as they are non-detergent, but they clean amazingly well!
