Now that you have learned about your unique Skin Dosha and experienced what Ayurveda and modern skin science can do for you, it’s high time to care for your hair too!

Maintaining a dedicated hair care regimen is as important as following a skincare routine. The results of the analysis of your hair/scalp type (or dosha) is the preliminary step that determines which products should you choose, how often you should wash your hair, what ingredients are best for your hair/ scalp type, etc. Let’s find answers to some of these questions.

The Different Hair Types or Dosha?

As a general rule, the straighter the hair the oilier it will be. Your genes, age, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits may determine the density, strength, texture, and oiliness of your hair.

Straight Hair (Kapha)

Straight hair falls flat from the roots and usually has a soft and silky texture. Kapha hair is usually normal to oily (with an oily scalp) and has good gloss or shine.

Issues or  Problems:

  • Oily or greasy hair.
  • Flaky dandruff on the scalp.
  • Prone to thinning.
  • Excess oil secretions may block the follicles.
  • Split ends.

Curly Hair (Vata)

This type of hair has prominent curls from the roots to the ends. Curly hair can have naturally loose curls, medium curls, or tight curls. Coiled or African-American hair tends to be more fragile and may break easily if not nourished regularly.

Issues or Problems:

  • More dry and frizzy compared to other hair types.
  • Brittle hair.
  • Low moisture.
  • Prone to tangling.

Normal to Wavy Hair (Pitta)

Pitta hair tends to be normal to wavy with a medium thickness and medium strength. It has normal porosity and normal moisture levels. A dosha imbalance may lead to overheated hair follicles which can cause:

Issues or Problems:

  • Hair thinning.
  • Early greying.

Your hair can be predominant Vata/Pitta/Kapha type or it can have a mixture of different types of doshas. For example, if you have Vata-Kapha Ayurvedic Hair Dosha, you may have rough hair which may be thick or curly.

How To Treat Different Hair Problems?

We recommend the following minimalist hair care regimen for different hair types:

  1. Vata Hair Dosha: For curly, dry, or brittle hair, we recommend Puraveda Revitalizing Shampoo & Conditioner. Since the formula is very concentrated, use just a small amount to nourish the scalp and hair. Remember that the conditioner must be applied only to the lower 2/3 strands for ~3 minutes before rinsing. The revitalizing line restores oils and moisture, while also deep conditioning the hair from roots to the tip. Use Shine On Serum to reconstruct hair from the inside out and restore shine.
  • Kapha Hair Dosha: For fine, thin, and limp hair or Kapha dosha, it is recommended that you use products rich in natural oils like Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Sesame Oil, Grapeseed Oil, etc. Our Volumizing Shampoo with African Black Soap as the base (ie;  sulfate-free) removes excess grease and dirt, while also volumizing your hair naturally. Wash hair 2-3 days a week, unless your scalp is extra oily. Apply Volumizing Conditioner to the lower 2/3 shafts to restore moisture and nourishment to delicate hair.
  • Pitta Hair Dosha: Our Everyday and Clarifying Hair Care line is best used for Normal and Wavy hair. Both are sulfate-free formulas that restore strong, healthy, and glossy hair. Made in the USA using locally-sourced ingredients, the Everyday Shampoo gently cleanses and nourishes the hair and also eliminates split ends and frizz. The clarifying shampoo can be used by everyone who is looking for a gentle formula to remove synthetic product build-up and eliminate hard water residue.

Our entire hair care line is made from natural ingredients, free from petroleum, dyes, perfumes, parabens, and other synthetic/ toxic chemicals. To stylize your hair and have salon-quality results, try our Puraveda Leave-in Styling Gel. Since the formulas are concentrated, a little goes a long way!
