Many of us tend to overlook bodycare. But in reality, this is an important step in your skincare regimen to avoid long-term sun damage, dryness, and the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, especially on the chest, arms, and legs.
The right kind of body moisturizer will depend on your particular skin concerns. Note that instead of body lotions or creams which are more diluted (more water and less oil), it’s actually beneficial to instead use organic body butters which (depending on brand) have more highly concentrated and potent/effective ingredients. Here are some of the key factors you should look for before buying an effective body moisturizer this season:
One that Seals the Moisture
A good body moisturizer should obviously have ingredients that seal in moisture for the longest possible time. These ingredients are known as ‘emollients’ which form a protective film on your skin. Emollients also attract moisture (humectants) and prevent moisture loss. This in turn importantly softens skin.
To effectively seal in moisture, apply your organic body butter while your skin is still slightly damp, and use products that contain the natural humectants listed below.
❌ Not to Use: Petroleum, Lanolin, Glycerin, Urea, Propylene Glycol, Isopropyl Myristate, Cetearyl glucoside, Dimethicone.
✅ DO Use: Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Sunflower seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Grapeseed Oil.
Essential Fatty Acids
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are ‘good fats’ with nutrients that your body needs in order to carry out normal functions, regulate your skin’s oil production, improve hydration, subdue breakouts, and minimize the signs of aging, and stay healthy & bright, These EFAs include Omega-3, Omega-6, and Omega-9 fatty acids which are not naturally produced in the body. However, they can be effectively absorbed into the skin through EFA-enriched body moisturizer or body butters.
✅ Use: Lecithin and natural cold-pressed oils.
Addressing Your Skin Concern
Choosing your body moisturizer will also depend on your skin type (or Dosha) and the severity of the dryness you are experiencing.
With Puraveda Organics, our Vanilla Silk Body Butter is suitable for all skin types, drenching your skin with anti-aging and collagen improving ingredients (for Vata Dosha), like Bilberry and Aloe Vera Gel; has a soothing effect (for Pitta Dosha) with Neem and Calendula, and balances skin tone and sebum production without being comedogenic, ie; blackhead forming (for Kapha Dosha).
Natural Fragrances Only
Most drugstore body creams, lotions, and butters are infused with artificial fragrances. Using a fragrance-free body care solution is very important as it reduces the chances of skin irritation and dryness. Instead, it is far better/safer to use body butters made with natural fragrances – such as those obtained from Pure Madagascar Vanilla in our @PVO’s Vanilla Silk Body Butter.
Infused in the form of essential oil (from the fresh dried pods of the Vanilla plant), it has a comforting, warm, and long-lasting fragrance. Being all-natural and having a high ‘Vanillin’ content, it also provides the additional benefits of de-stressing aromatherapy, as well as promoting a softer and silkier texture.
Long-lasting Effect & Quick Absorption
Compared to body lotions and creams, body butters last for a much longer time on your skin. Our Vanilla Silk Body Butter has the dual-function of providing not only 24+ hours moisturization, but also absorbs quickly when applied on the skin without feeling greasy, guaranting deep skin moisture without transfer onto clothing.
Add Sun Protection
For a much needed added layer of protection in the daytime, it’s extremely important to wear sunscreen. Once the body butter is completely soaked into your skin, add a film of our @PVO SunProtect SPF 30+ (broad spectrum, mineral based organic sunscreen) on your hands, legs, shoulders and other exposed layers for up to 98% protection from the damaging effects of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.
