Summer is the season for swimming, beach outings, BBQs and a host of other outdoor activities. But all that time spent outdoors also means that your skin is bombarded by the sun’s UV rays, which rapidly penetrate your skin causing cumulative and lasting damage. With just a few simple preventable measures and by using advanced skin care treatments, you can keep your skin looking young and fresh for years to come.
1. Dry, Irritated Skin
As you spend time in the sun, pool, or indoor air conditioning, your skin can begin to feel dry. The humidity level in the air along with a compromised pH barrier can cause skin irritation. To reduce the chances of skin dryness and irritation:
- Cleanse your face at least 2X times a day (Day & Night). Repeat cleansing after getting out of the pool or sweating.
- Always use a mild Organic Cleanser. Your cleanser should preferably have moisture-restoring ingredients like Aloe Vera, Lemon, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, etc.
2. Blemishes & Acne Breakouts
To reduce the occurrence of breakouts, follow these skin care rules:
- Exfoliate 2-3X times a week to keep pores clear and healthy (read more about ‘The Right Way to Exfoliate This Summer’).
- The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests using non-comedogenic products to prevent acne breakouts.
- For sudden breakouts treat with our earth mineral, clay-based On the Spot Blemish Masks for quick and effective results.
3. Heat Rash
Depending on skin type, you may be susceptible to developing Heat Rash (or Prickly Heat), especially those who have oily skin/ blocked sweat glands. These are small, fine, itchy rashes that cause a prickling heat sensation on the skin. Keep skin clean and sweat-free helps avoid heat rash.
4. Sunburn
UVB rays are typically responsible for producing sunburn. The risk of sunburn depends upon how sensitive your skin is and how strong the UV rays are. Frequent sunburns increase your chances of skin cancer.
Not just for summer, you should ‘always’ protect your skin year round with Zinc Oxide-based Broad Spectrum Mineral-based SunProtect SPF30+ Sunscreen. Spend more time in the shade and cover up with UV protective clothing, especially between the hours of 9 am and 3 pmg when the sun is the strongest, or the UV index is above 3.
5. Sun Allergy
Certain medications and hypersensitivity to exposure of UV rays can cause sun allergy. Red, itchy, scaly skin with big red bumps are signs of a sun allergy. Some people also have a hereditary sun allergy.
In addition to protecting your skin with our organic sunscreen, spritz on some of our PuraVeda Organics Organic Toner/ Hydrator to instantly calm skin redness or other minor skin irritations.
6. Hyperpigmentation & Melasma
Being out in the sun darkens hyperpigmentation and female melasma, making it more noticeable. To even skin tone and balance melanin production (skin pigment), use both our BioScience Peptide Complex & SunProtect SPF 30+. Each of these two formulas contain our proprietary Ayurvedic blend ‘DevaBright’ (with Kojic Acid from Mushrooms, Uva ursi or Bearberry, and Licorice root). This natural treatment with phytoactives like Arbutin and Glabridin produce results quite similar to Hydroquinone, but without damaging effects on the skin (learn more).
7. Swimmer’s Itch
If you love swimming, especially in lakes, oceans, and other natural water bodies, parasites and other organisms may be present and can cause a rash known as swimmer’s itch. Rub your skin briskly with a towel and gently exfoliate to avoid this irritating condition.
8. Folliculitis
When the follicles of your body hair become infested with bacteria and grime, this can cause tiny, painful, itchy red bumps. This can happen when you wear tight clothes, lounge in unclean tubs, or do not follow hygiene protocols after a fitness session/ excessive sweating.
After taking a shower, use Puraveda After Shave Balm/Toner with Pure Sandalwood to reduce skin itchiness and red bumps. Apply Vanilla Silk & Body Butter before bed to heal and nourish a compromised skin barrier.
