Many of us rely on professional spa services to perfect our skin and hair. However, during this COVID-19 quarantine, be it household chores or self-care, we are being required to be our own service experts. But the question remains…Are we really doing it the right way?
In our last post, we discussed the downside of ‘lockdown skin’ and the reasons behind the sudden breakouts and skin dryness that you might be experiencing while you are staying home. To bring your skin back into to balance, here are the 10 Best Organic Skin Care Tips t to follow during this quarantine:
1. Skin Detoxing
Skin detoxification involves two important steps – Cleansing and Toning.
Even when you’re not going out into a polluted environment, the bacteria in your home and on your own skin microbiome can cause skin breakouts. The best way to combat this is to cleanse your face with a mild organic cleanser as the first step in your everyday morning and nightly organic skin care regimen.
Toning is the next vital step. Organic/non-alcohol based Face toners or hydrators balance the skin after cleansing. Skin Energizing and Detoxing ingredients like Green Tea, Bilberry, Calendula, Peppermint and other botanicals in organic toners help alleviate problems like oiliness and infection, calms skin irritation and prepares for the next critical steps in a personalized skin care regimen.
Recommendation: Take the Dosha Quiz to find the most suitable Organic Cleansers and Toners/Hydrators for your unique skin type.
2. Moisturizing
Being in dry, artificially heated or cooled environments for many weeks at a stretch can makes your skin parched and in need of moisture… far more than the outdoors heat of summer days. When skin remains dry for a long time, hyaluronic acid content drops precipitously, causing the collagen-elastin matrix of the skin to begin to deteriorate. This in turn leads to accelerated aging of skin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet as well as thinning and sagging of the skin. For sensitive skin (especially, those having rosacea), dryness of the skin can aggravate inflammation and cause sudden breakouts or flares.
Recommendation: Using a Hyaluronic Acid + Natural Plant Oils based Organic Serum for the Face and Shea Butter based Organic Moisturizer for the Body helps maintain natural moisture levels in the skin longer periods of time, while repairing the skin and slowing the aging process.
3. Sleep
Since we have got a lot of free-time during quarantine, many of us are sleeping less while watching our favorite series all night long, or conversely are napping in excess of our normal sleep requirements. In either case, this is affecting our health in the long run.
Recommendation: Most healthy adults need at least 7-9 hours of sleep. Sheltering in place is probably the best time to adjust our ‘biological clocks’ in order to help your body heal, rejuvenate and function at its best.
4. Cross-Contamination via Facial Touching
The Coronavirus pandemic has taught us that cross-contamination can be a big factor in the spread of disease. Microbes work in a much similar way on the skin. If you already have an inflammatory skin condition like acne or eczema) then contaminated hands or products can inadvertently transfer bacteria, causing infection in a new place.
Recommendation: Always follow good sanitation practices and do not touch your face too often, especially if you have oily or inflamed skin. Disinfect your hands and face with Organic Cleansers (made with African Black Soap or Yucca Root) before you apply any product on your face.
5. The Use of Facial Masks
The correct use of exfoliating skin masks hydrates the skin, removes excess oils, dead skin and corrects the appearance of pores. With extra time on your hands, you can indulge in the experience of using a exfoliation mask. Use an organic, plant-based mask such as our @PuraVedaOrganics Papaya and Honey scrub/mask to restore healthy bacterial skin biome and balance pH levels for healthier and more radiant skin.
Recommendation: Self-administered facial masks are not complicated, especially when using our bestselling organic mask – Papaya & Honey Exfoliation Mask & Scrub. Sensitive skin should try the SBR version which is identical, but removes the mechanical scrubbing/exfoliation agent of micronized walnut shells, which can irritate sensitive skin.
6. Stay Hydrated
Many of us while staying at home don’t recognize signs of thirst. But regardless of circumstances, our cells are constantly working and cellular water stores are being utilized like any other day. Excessive caffeine and alcohol can dehydrate us further.
Even mild dehydration can increase feelings of being tired, cause headaches and affect mood. Being dehydrated over time reduces skin hydration, and can cause serious health consequences.
Recommendation: You know you’re drinking enough water when urine appears clear or pale yellow.
7. Eating Fresh & Organic
According to the science of Ayurveda, when you eat seasonal crops, your body receives more ‘life force’ (prana) vs. food that undergoes stages of processing and is saturated with hormones, pesticides, and GMOs. Locally grown foods reduce the chances of food allergies, ensures food safety and makes us more energetic. In addition, anyone who has ever grown a vegetable garden know that the flavors of locally grown foods are much richer and complex making dining a far more pleasurable experience. Nothing tastes like fresh!
Recommendation: Always ensure that you choose ingredients that are ‘organic’, ‘natural’, non-GMO, free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides and have been locally harvested.
8. Eye Care
If you’re working from home during this trying time, your eyes are probably the first to be impacted due to continuous usage of blue-screens. Not only does this strain the eyes, but can also cause dark circles and puffy eyes. Neglect ramps up the process of aging of the delicate skin around the eyes and causes fine lines and crow’s feet.
Recommendation: Use refrigerated Aloe Eye Serum whenever you feel to depuff, soothe and reduce dryness of the skin around eyes. Follow up with Overnight Eyeline Prevention Oil before bed to boost collagen production and combat signs of aging around eyes.
9. Anti-Aging Skin Peptides
Since your skin is being minimally exposed to environmental stressors, this is the best time to reclaim a younger looking face with the help of Peptide-based Skincare. Argireline and MatrixylTM are two revolutionary and clinically proven peptides that increase
Collagen I and IV levels and also Hyaluronic Acid content to greatly help reduce fine lines and wrinkle depth.
Recommendation: With the proper concentration of proven peptides, our Topical Botox treatment – ‘BioScience Peptide Complex’ is a perfect organic anti-aging formula for all skin types. Apply morning and evening regularly for up to 60% wrinkle reduction in 60 days. This formula also reduces hyperpigmentation and sensitivity, leaving your skin with a noticeable radiant glow.
10. Exercise
Exercising during stay-at-home orders is crucial to not only physical health, but also mental health. Increased stress levels have a direct impact on skin by altering the production and breakdown of skin collagen levels.
Recommendation: Do light exercise every day to encourage good circulation. This helps to nourish and revitalize vital organs, including the skin.
