Here at Teva Skin Science (soon to be renamed PuraVeda Organics) we are often asked to define these terms as applies to our product line. We think it deserves revisiting due to the confusion that seems to be fairly common.
Q) What is the Definition of ‘Organic’
A) For general purposes, we can agree that the term ‘Organic’ means grown without synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides/herbicides or raised without hormones or antibiotics. It also means that the product to be consumed or used topically does not have any genetic modification (GMO’s) or tampering.
Further, when used as a certification by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), it means the product or it’s component ingredients are at least 93% comprised of USDA certified as organically produced in the USA. Our policy here at Teva, is that we use USDA certified ingredients whenever possible and/or available. This applies to about 2/3rds of our ingredients. We NEVER use any ingredient that has been grown with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, GMO’S etc, but we do utiilize ingredients that are not able to be USDA certified for the simple reason that they are not grown commercially in the USA.
Q) What is the Definition of ‘Sustainably Wild-Harvested’?
A) Most of our wild-harvested ingredients literally grow wild, and cannot be grown on massive farms or plantations; (or in the USA for that matter) and as such are not subjected to pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are hand gathered in remote regions globally, and brokered through responsible all natural ingredient suppliers.
Care is taken by the harvesters to ensure that the demand does not outstrip supply. This is the reason there are so many inferior ingredients in less expensive products, or that there is such a tiny amount of some ingredients actually in products..
Here is where it really pays to do your homework and read ingredient labels! The ingredients at the bottom of the list are in the least quantities. However, sustainability is very important. Some of our non-USA ingredients are grown on small family farms which have been sustainable for generations under Fair Trade rules.
Q) What is Fair Trade?
A) Fair Trade is a movement of individuals and organizations working to ensure that producers in poor countries receive a greater percentage of the price paid by consumers. While there are several definitions of fair trade, they all include:
- Fair Trade Price – base price for raw ingredients or goods is adjusted higher than the open market price
- Price Premium – a percentage above the base fair trade price is paid into a separate account for development projects in producer communities.
- Working Conditions – Fair Trade operators must adhere to basic human and labor rights – including the right to organize, no child labor, access to health care, and so on.
- Environmental Stewardship – Fair Trade organizations must minimize environmental impact.
Our Company Policy and Mission encompasses all these criteria! Organic, Authentic botanical ingredients that foster health and well-being not only to the people who purchase our end products, but also foster health and well-being among the producers and workers who help bring our products to fruition.
