So you have been using a natural, SLS-free Organic Cleanser and a powerful Anti-aging Skin Serum with beneficial botanical actives… but still you aren’t really convinced that the 2nd ‘essential step’ to your Skin Care regimen (ie; Toners or Hydrators) is all that neccessary.
However, when you skip this very important 2nd step of ‘toning’ the skin, you receive only half of the cleansing and moisturizing benefits of your well-invested organic skin care regimen. Use of an organic skin toner balances pH, removes deep seated oil, dirt and debris, provides hydration, and most importantly, opens the deep cell membrane ‘pores’, prepping the skin for serious treatments and much more. Therefore, toning (or hydrators as they are frequently called now, as most of them are not based in alcohol as were the toners of yesteryear) is not just a buzzword in the skin care world, but rather is a vital part of an effective skin care regimen.
If you are looking to add the best hydrating facial toner to your skin care regimen, read this complete guide on skin toners to help you on the path to achieve flawless, radiant and healthy looking skin.
What are Toners or Hydrators.. and Why do you Need Them
Facial toner is a quick absorbing liquid (water like consistency) that is applied in-between cleansing and moisturizing the skin. When you cleanse with an Organic cleanser, the bigger molecules of foreign elements such as dirt, make-up and oils are removed. However, even after thorough cleansing, some micro-traces of these elements remain in the pores. Skin being naturally acidic, use of water (with neutral pH) and alkaline soaps tend to shift the pH balance of the skin.
Organic toners contain beneficial ingredients like antioxidants, exfoliants, hydrating humectants and anti-inflammatory skin actives which help in removing these smaller molecules of dead skin cells, excess oil and sebum and other foreign/toxic elements like make-up and bacteria that may have been deep-seated inside the pores. pH balancing toners also help to restore the temporary disruption of the acid mantle of the skin that cleansers cause, so that the protective barrier stays healthy, strong and hydrated.
In a nutshell, here are the six main benefits of toners:
- Providing lightweight hydration.
- Balancing your skin’s natural pH.
- Providing mild-exfoliation.
- Reduce visibility of pores (for oily skin).
- Prevent/Treat blackheads, acne and other oily/sensitive skin conditions.
- Keeps oil production and hormonal action in the skin balanced, as well as removes greasy shine and traces of any foreign matter on the skin.
Choosing the Right Toner for Your Skin Type
While choosing a skin toner, here are some important points to be considered:
Know your Dosha
Always use a skin toner that will best adapt to your skin. To know your unique skin type and get personalized product recommendations, take the Puraveda Organics Dosha Quiz.
- Toner for Dry Skin (Normal/Vata Dosha) – Daily Hydrator/Toner with extra Hydration and Soothing properties.
- Toner for Sensitive Skin (Sensitive/Blemished/Rosacea Skin/ Pitta Dosha) – SBR Hydrator/Toner with Calming and pH Balancing Elements.
- Toner for Oily Skin and Enlarged Pores (Kapha Dosha) – Pore Perfect Hydrator/Toner with Oil-balancing, Mild-Astringent and Anti-bacterial properties.
Even though many facial toners feel refreshing, they often contain alcohol, and these are very drying to the skin, and frequently actually cause rebound oiliness. The basic aim of using a toner is to hydrate the skin. Thus it is an irony that almost all commercial, chemical-based toners (especially those labeled as ‘astringents’) contain differing forms of alcohols that actually cause moisture loss from the skin. We strongly advise that you make sure labels don’t contain any sort of alcohol or it’s derivatives. Alcohol can also irritate the skin.
Natural Toning Ingredients
When it comes to toners, (frequently called ‘hydrators’) there are a few ingredients that work extremely well for all skin types. With ingredients like Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Rose, Lavender, White Willow Bark (Salicylic Acid), Green Tea, Solomon Seal’s root and Calendula, you can usually be confident of a balanced skin pH (all our @PuraVedaOrganics hydrators are a 4.5 pH for perfect acid mantle restoration) for a healthy glowing complexion. Look for toners with Vitamin-infusions to help remove dullness and restore a natural glow.
No Toxic Chemicals
Your toner should be free from toxins and preservatives like parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, formaldehydes, polysorbates, triclosan, TEA/DEA, synthetic fragrances and colors.
How to Use Toners
Today, most toners/facial mists or hydrators come in spray bottles for easy application. All you need to do; After thoroughly cleansing your face with an organic cleanser of the same line, just spritz a few sprays of the toner into your hands and apply evenly on face, neck and décolleté. Allow your toner to air dry while it fully absorbs into the skin. Remember to never fully-dry your skin before toning.
Editor’s Pro Tip: Most molecules penetrate better when the skin in wet. Applying an organic facial toner right before the application of a concentrated serum preps your skin for faster absorption of the beneficial ingredients.
For oily skin, a toner goes an extra mile in deep-cleansing the pores on a regular basis. Therefore, for kapha dosha, the organic skin toner must be used day and night. For dry and sensitive skin, the toner may be used once a day at night time (though we recommend using twice a day for better results). You can also reapply toner whenever you feel your face needs fast hydration or to help calm redness.
After applying toner, leave damp and proceed to applying the treatment serum of your choice. And of course we highly recommend our line of @PuraVedaOrganics organic serums, eye serums and mineral-based sunscreen.
