Freckles are not blemishes. In our opinion, they are tiny, beautiful imperfections that are simply a part of the unique natural spectrum and variations of human skin. Caused by triggers from the UVB rays of the sun, or a silent gene in your DNA, freckles are harmless, painless, consisting of a group of concentrated melanized cells.
Thus, living with freckles or not is completely a personal choice. But if you’re someone who’s looking for a more even-toned complexion or are self-conscious about your freckled skin, then rest assured, natural treatments do exist to prevent or minimize their appearance.
Note that unlike therapies like laser treatment or chemical peels for freckles which can have negative side effects such as redness, dryness, and even more skin discoloration, it is important to opt for natural & safer alternatives instead, for long-term results and enhanced overall skin health.
Breaking through the mask of perfection, having freckles is considered to be one of the hottest beauty trends for years now. Celebrities like Ashley Graham, Lindsay Lohan, and Meagan Markle do live and slay with freckles. So just like these A-listers, what you should aim for is – opting for personalized regimens that promote overall skin health and keep you looking younger and more beautiful for years to come.
Why Do You Have Freckles?
As already mentioned, freckles can be triggered as a consequence of changes in the natural environment as well as your genetics. Sunburn or overexposure to the suns’ UV rays can increase the incidence of freckles.
When it comes to the genetic factor in having freckles – it can be attributed to a gene called ‘MC1R’. Without going into technicalities, this gene simply triggers excessive melanin production in some individuals. However, it does not affect all individuals the same way, and is more common in people who have light skin or skin that tans poorly.
Other factors that can be responsible for having freckles are – the capacity to tan, sun exposure, previous history of freckles, and hormone treatments. An increased exposure to UVB rays can cause freckles to become darker and more visible.
- Freckles can be completely genetic in some individuals, and can appear as early as 2-3 years of age, which generally fade away on their own.
- While in others, it can accelerate with age (especially after 40)/overexposure to UV rays and these may need specialized treatments to fade.
Areas most affected with Freckles: sun exposed skin, face, neck, chest, arms, back, forehead, and shins.
Is there a difference between Freckles and Blemishes?
Blemishes can be blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, redness, or cysts and are usually an infection due to the resultant effect of microbial, dirt/oil accumulation, and clogged pores. Freckles, on the other hand, are a result of excess melanocyte production, which leads to hyperpigmentation in some areas of the skin. So blemish treatments are entirely different from and not suitable for freckles/hyperpigmentation.
Steps to Minimize Appearance of Freckles
No one is born with freckles. Some preventable and fading treatments can help suppress melanin production to lighten hyperpigmented skin. So here’s what needs to be done:
1. Minimize Sun Exposure
Prevent freckles from appearing more apparent on the skin by simply protecting yourself from UV rays.
Our SunProtect SPF 30+ is a barrier (physical) protection sunscreen that deflects UVA, UVB, and UVC rays (broad-spectrum) from penetrating/reacting through the dermal layers, providing up to 98% sun protection, thus helping prevents freckles.
DevaBright (explained below) also battles hyperpigmentation effectively. The formula works instantly on application and is also child-safe and water resistant.
2. Freckle Treatment
The natural ingredients Kojic Acid (from fermented Mushrooms), Licorice root (Yashtimadhu), and Bearberry (Uva ursi) works best for diminishing the appearance of freckles or any sort of hyperpigmentation on the skin. The powerful botanical trio is infused in their clinically proven ratio in two of our revolutionary formulas – BioScience Peptide Complex and SunProtect SPF 30+. The proprietary blend is called DevaBright.
DevaBright contains phytoactives which limit the production of melanin to brighten the skin/reduce dark spots/ promote even complexion. It is free from toxins and side effects.
Green Tea, Vitamin C & E, and Aloe Vera work in sync with DevaBright to reduce free radical damage and provide maximum effectiveness in the battle against hyperpigmentation.
3. Biweekly Exfoliation
Exfoliation 2-3X times a week with Papaya & Honey Facial Mask & Scrub (or SBR Facial Mask for Sensitive Skin) gets rid of dead skin cells, removes reactive oxidative stress ie; ‘free radicals’, and helps speed regeneration of new skin cells. The increase in cellular turnover heals the skin and promotes an even appearance. Here’s how to efficiently exfoliate at home.
