Sunscreen and sunblock products are being marketed harder than ever before, not so much because of the dangers of prolonged sun exposure, but a more superficial reason: Vanity.. Nothing sells faster than a woman in a bathing suit with a fancy tanning oil in an interesting bottle.
Hey, whatever it takes to get people to be responsible about protecting themselves from unnecessary sun exposure—Maybe it is vanity marketing, but we are here to tell you why skin protection runs deeper than the season.
It isn’t just drugstores isles filled with a dizzying array of sun protection, all boasting the “highest level of SPF protection,” but also high-end retailers such as Nordstrom or Macy’s, with their far pricier/fancier tanning creams and lotions, not to mention the cosmetic companies who jump on the first hint of Summer as an opportunity to sell an Instagram worthy bottle of designed sunscreen or oil.
How to decide what is right for you and your family? We are here to help you sort things out! We are going to cover what you should look for in a sun protection product. As always, for a full list of ingredients and explanations, visit our Teva Skin Care Ingredient GLOSSARY.
Top Five Tips for Choosing Safe Sun Protection
1. Non-Toxic Ingredients
As a broad rule of thumb, keep an eye out for non-toxic products with ingredients you can trust. Just because something is greenwashed and has words like “organic” or “all-natural” plastered all over it, it is always a good idea to have a look and determine for yourself which ingredients are reasonable and safe and which are unsafe fillers. Why would you protect your skin by rubbing chemicals on its surface? Doesn’t really make sense, does it?
2. Broad Spectrum or BUST
If you are going to apply sun protection, don’t go halfway, apply a broad spectrum product that combats both UVA + UVB rays. Remember.. UVA rays are those that lead to premature aging and skin cancer, and UVB rays are those that cause sun burns.
3. Resistance to the Elements
No sun protection product is allowed to call themselves 100% water and/or sweat resistant, and every sunscreen study requires the participants to reapply every 2 hours (which is far more than most of us do in real life). This is what we recommend for our SunProtect SPF 30+ as well. Depending where you are, the sun can be incredibly strong and it’s a good idea to take reapplication precautions to ensure protection all day long! Should you ever read a product label that promises 12-hour protectio, steer clear!
Try and educate yourself about ingredients in your skin care and this is more important than ever when it comes to Sun Protection! Look for ingredients such as Coconut Oil which is a natural moisturizer that blocks sun damage while healing skin to a smooth and glowing surface, as well as your sun blocking (hopefully natural ones) ingredients.
5.SPF 30+ is the Ticket
When you are buying a sun protection product, look for a broad spectrum SPF 30+ that blocks 97% of UVA +UVB rays from harming your skin, causing you to age or develop cancer.
