Have you been hearing about the #CleanBeautyMovement lately, and wondered what all the hype is about? In the past few years, words like ‘Natural’, ‘Organic’ and ‘Eco-friendly’ have become mainstream terms when it comes to choosing a quality skincare or haircare product. That movement has evolved into the concept of ‘Clean Beauty’ which is more focused, and stresses the larger picture. Most people assume that terms like ‘natural’, ‘organic’ and ‘clean’ in the skin care industry are all basically the same thing, but in truth, they have distinct differences. Today we talk about clean beauty and why it’s important.
What is Clean Beauty?
‘Clean Beauty’ has no standard definition in the skin care industry. In general, it means a non-toxic product that doesn’t contain any ingredient which could possibly be linked to harmful health effects. These formulations should have no long term health effects ie; cancer or endocrine disruption, nor short-term issues like skin irritation and redness.
The term ‘natural’ is mostly used to describe the purity of ingredients and such products contain ingredients that are derived from nature and are not lab-made. On the other hand, ‘clean’ reassures that the ingredients are safe to use and are eco-friendly and sustainable.
Clean beauty doesn’t mean that it should be 100% organic. It can contain certain engineered ingredients (such as dermal peptides) as long as they are safe, non-toxic and/or derived naturally/organically. Clean beauty is often associated with terms like plant-derived, vegan, naturally-sourced, eco-friendly, wildcrafted and sustainably sourced.
“According to a renowned aesthetician, – ‘Clean beauty is the one which the skin and body can process, accept, recognize, and successfully use it without irritation, sensitization, disease, or disruption. Clean can be synthetic and/or natural.”
Criteria for a Clean Beauty Product
Clean beauty must (at least) satisfy these two criteria:
- Non-toxic ingredients: All clean beauty products should be devoid of ingredients potentially harmful for the skin/body in the long or short term. It should NOT contain chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, sulfates, PEGs, BHT, BHA and their derivatives, drying alcohols, silicones, oxybenzones, artificial preservatives, dyes, fragrances, colors, etc. To judge whether an ingredient is safe or not, check the EWG website.
- Transparency: There should be transparency in labeling the product ingredients and the company shouldn’t hide their ingredients under any umbrella term. For instance, many companies hide certain toxic ingredients under broad tags such as added ‘colors’, ‘fragrances’ or ‘preservatives’.
Also, beware of ‘greenwashing’ ingredients, which is when brands falsely label their products as containing beneficial and/or ‘environmentally-safe’ ingredients for the sole purpose of marketing/advertising without having any actual effective ingredients in the complete formula. Terms that you should be cautious of are: hypoallergenic, cruelty-free and no harmful chemicals.
