We recently learned that the term ‘Clean Beauty’ first emerged in Southern California along with the trend of “clean eating” in the late 1990s?  Since then, it has become more of a marketing term, where skincare and cosmetic brands claim “clean beauty” means to be free from undesirable/ less necessary ingredients and have a more natural composition.

But is that the actual truth? Having been in the Organic/Natural beauty business many years, we are seeing a great deal of poorly researched formulations, lack of regulation, and misuse of natural/synthetic ingredient terminology and products  arising in the past 10 years, regardless of these kinds of claims.

In a world of “influencers”, science, and sustainable development  – where every product is made to be put under a reality check – ‘clean beauty’, we feel definitely needs a reformed approach in the name of consumer transparency! This requires a balance between efficiency, sustainability, factualness in ingredients and their concentrations, and the removal of misinformation/misrepresentation/false information.

[Here’s an intro to – Clean beauty].

Defining Clean Beauty in 2024

Fast forward to 2024, today’s customers are more concerned about product efficacy than just ‘clean’ and ‘safe’ ingredients/ formulations.

So, the new trending term is ‘cleanical’ – a product that is made with a blend of clean (ethical) and effective/ clinically ingredients. Of course, these formulas also need to be  free of chemical toxins

Clean Beauty – The New Definition

This new definition of clean beauty has its roots in the ancient medical system of ‘Ayurveda’. Ayurvedic Skincare and Haircare uses the principles of balance and purity to synchronize the three doshas (life forces) – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Aryuveda historically and successfully uses proven (over centuries) plant-based ingredients for their healing and calming qualities to help ‘train the skin’ and provide long-lasting results.

This is a targeted approach where your skin/hair receives only those active botanicals that produce actual results far better than a  commercial general non-specific skin or hair type formula would have. For instance, a Pitta Dosha imbalance (such as those diagnosed with Rosacea or Sensitive Skin), will benefit far with ingredients like natural Salicylic Acid (from White Willow Bark) and Comfrey rather than with Castor Oil (which is instead very good for Kapha/Oily skin dosha) or other sensitive skin-unfriendly ingredients like Alcohol or Retinol.
