Whaaat.. you say?? Acid on my Face? Facial Acids might sound downright scary, not to mention harsh and inappropriate for your skin, but in truth, when used correctly, the acids we here @PuraVeda Organics use in natural Ayurvedic skin care is essential to gorgeous, healthy, glowing skin! According to dermatologists and extensive research studies, these acids consistently even out skin tone and help reduce freckles, (hyperpigmentation), as well as melasma and other pigment irregularities over time. The correct amount of acidic ingredients in your everyday skin care regimen will balance the pH levels of your skin and dissolve/eradicate dead skin cells, allowing for the regeneration of new skin cells.
Defying the Signs of Aging – According to a study in 2014, using carefully formulated skin care acids over a period of 2 to 8 weeks of treatment can have significant effects in treating wrinkles, improving skin hydration and elasticity and provide uniformity in pigmentation.
1. Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid (HLA) is a must-have natural humectant, especially for dry skin (or vata dosha) individuals who are in constant need of intense moisturization. HLA is ‘Glyco-Amino-Glycal’ naturally found in the human body which works to pull in moisture from the air and deliver it to your skin for deep hydration. HLA also helps in repairing cellular damage and accelerates the healing process, making it a vital element in treating inflammatory skin conditions such as Rosacea, Eczema, and Psoriasis.
Did you know? A Hyaluronic Acid molecule can hold moisture up to 1,000 times its own weight!
Since the amount of natural HLA found in our skin decreases as we reach our 30s, topical application of HLA (obtained via fermentation from plant sources) will prevent skin sagging and formation of new lines and wrinkles as time marches on. Our BioScience Peptide Complex contains vegan/naturally-sourced HLA and is great for treating dry or dehydrated skin (which is a primary cause in the development of fine lines and wrinkles).
2. Kojic Acid
If you have dark spots or an uneven skin tone, Kojic Acid (present in our Sun Protect SPF 30+’s DevaBright Formula as well as our BioScience Peptide Complex) decreases melanin production and improves overall pigmentation uniformity. Kojic Acid is naturally derived from a species of Japanese mushrooms, and is used in many skin care products to lighten/brighten skin tone as well as the treatment of various skin conditions.
Kojic Acid inhibits an enzyme called tyrosinase, the latter being a limiting factor in production of melanin (the skin pigment). The decreased melanin production helps in combatting dark spots due to sun damage, age spots, melasma and makes scars less noticeable. Kojic acid also has antifungal and antibacterial benefits.
3. Gamma Linolenic Acid
Gamma Linolenic Acid or GLA is naturally found in Borage Seed Oil (22-25%), Blackcurrant seed oil (15%) and Evening Primrose oil (8-10%). Gamma Linolenic Acid is a natural moisturizer that treats excessive dryness (vata) and skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and skin redness due to hypersensitivity (pitta). GLA not only works as an antioxidant to remove toxins from our body but also replenishes our skin with the right levels of Omega 6 fatty acids, essential to encourage healthy cell growth.
If you have excessive skin oil production, GLA will help to balance sebum production, help rid the skin of comedones, and reduce the size of pores by up to 25% within a month, and clear kapha associated acne.
4. Salicylic Acid
A popular ingredient in acne-fighting formulas, Salicylic acid is safe to cleanse and unblock pores and clear up acne breakouts and blackheads…a real boon for kapha individuals!
Salicylic acid (SA) is naturally extracted from the bark of the white willow tree (beware of commercial SA, which are produced in large scale using chemicals such as phenolates and carbon dioxide and are very damaging to the skin).
Natural SA contains Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) which helps in treating blemishes for oily/normal/combination skin type. Salicylic acid also reduces skin inflammation and is an important ingredient for ‘On the Spot’ blemish treatments. Giving a boost in cellular turnover rate, Salicylic acid promotes healing, and sloughs away dead skin cells, while clarifying the skin.
5. Ascorbic Acid
L-Ascorbic acid aka Vitamin C is a popular anti-aging ingredient and a powerhouse of natural antioxidants. The benefits of Vitamin C are well documented in rebuilding collagen, smoothing fine lines and firming the skin. It is yet another weapon in our arsenal of anti-hyperpigmentation ingredients.. evening out dark spots and other pigment problems. Ascorbic acid is also an adaptogen, meaning it helps to balance pH levels to promote both moisturization (for vata), and oil balancing (for kapha).
Additionally, Ascorbic Acid boosts UV sun protection, neutralizes the process of ‘glycation’ that can cause rapid aging, gives protection against environmental stressors, heals acne scars (when combined with Vitamin E), and improves skin tightness.
6. Tartaric acid
Tartaric acid is naturally extracted from Tamarind extract and other fruits such as grapes, apricots, and avocados. The primary role of tartaric acid in a formula is to regulate the pH levels and make things stable.
Tartaric acid is a type of Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) which helps in promoting collagen synthesis, while also correcting hyperpigmentation. Tartaric acid has been used since ancient times in both South American and Asian-Indian cultures to improve skin tone and create an anti-bacterial environment for acne reduction.
7. Alpha Lipoic Acid
Mostly everyone knows about the anti-aging benefits of Vitamin C, but have you heard of the even more powerful Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)? ALA is a powerful antioxidant that works very effectively in fighting free radical damage in skin cells.
Using ALA enriched skin care serums (in a therapeutic concentration of ~ 3 to 5%) activates the collagen transcription factor known as AP-1 (a pro-inflammatory chemical) that quells the activity of free radicals, removes glycated collagen from our skin, and thus aids in the reduction of wrinkles, scarring, sagging and atrophic changes of the skin.
Did you know? Pure ALA is 400 times stronger than Vitamin C and E combined (both known for their powerful antioxidant properties).
Punic acid (aka conjugated linoleic acid) is naturally extracted from Pomegranate Seed oil. Rich in antioxidants and omega 5 fatty acids, this powerful Skin Acid supports cell resilience by working as an antioxidant and destroying the harmful free radicals that cause our skin to visibly age. The action of this acid is supported by phytoestrogens that helps in regulating the skin’s hormonal balance to help alleviate the unpleasant side effects of menopause and other hormonal shifts on the skin.
Punic acid is often called as the fountain of health and youth for it’s 4 ‘anti’s’ – anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, ant-carcinogenic and anti-aging. The acid contains prostaglandins which help improve circulation while rejuvenating and regenerating dermal cells.
Caution: Never directly use these skin care acids in unprocessed/wrongly processed forms as inappropriate concentrations or unbalanced pH levels can aggravate and worsen your existing skin conditions.
Our purpose in introducing you to the ingredients we use in our formulas is to help you make better choices when it comes to a skin care regimen that works for you. These naturally extracted botanical acids will boost your skin health for a clarified, beautiful and naturally younger-looking skin.
