When a skin flare or irritation appears, it is common to resort to DIY/self-treatment using over-the-counter or prescription acne products. How to Differentiate Between Different Chronic Skin Conditions? 

Over the years, many of our clients have presented with some of the most common (but treatable/ manageable) chronic skin conditions. Here’s the list, with their key differences for detection: 

1. Acne

Acne is most common in teens, however, it can also appear in adults due to hormonally driven overactive sebaceous glands which can block pores, bacterial growth, hormonal changes (especially during menstruation, pregnancy, PCOS, stress), genetic predisposition, intake of high-glycemic food or sugary diets, certain medications, improper skincare products, and environmental factors. 

2. Eczema

It is one of the most annoying (ie; itchiest) chronic skin conditions but can be treated quite efficiently. Eczema is often triggered by allergens (such as harsh soaps, pollen, dust mites), a weakened immune system, genetic factors, stress, and temperature changes. People with chronic eczema experience intense itching and dry skin accompanied with tiny blisters and peeling rough patches that can ooze and painfully crack, particularly in the folds of elbows and knees and on the hands.  

3. Rosacea

Unlike acne, rosacea causes persistent sunburn-like facial redness, flushing, and visible tiny blood vessels accompanied with acne-like bumps and a stinging or burning sensation. Family history increases the risk of rosacea but it can also be caused due to abnormal immune response (which triggers proliferation of Demodex mites on the skin – learn more). 

4. Psoriasis

Psoriasis can cause dandruff-like scaling or rashes accompanied with dry and cracked skin that may bleed. Once symptoms start, the cyclic psoriatic rashes and flares remain for a few weeks to a month before they subside. In contrast to eczema, psoriasis skin has a more raised appearance. The cause is primarily genetic disposition.
