Which PuraVeda Formula Is Right for You?

Estimates show that 1 in 5 Americans develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Not to mention ~1 million Americans are currently living with Melanoma (reported by American Academy of Dermatology)! And even if you escape that, the sun and its UVs are still the #1 reason for rapid, noticeably visible dermal/skin aging.

Fortunately, this domino effect can be greatly minimized (up to 100%) by building safe-sun habits – consistent SPF use, UV protective clothing, shade, and regular skin checks. As per the American Academy of Dermatolgy, a good sunscreen should protect you from both UVA, UVB & UVC rays and must have SPF 30.

But how much sunscreen is adequate sunscreen? Does it count if your makeup additionally contains SPF?  Is it okay if you forget to re-apply? What are the body areas that you must cover? Is higher SPF application better? Here’s more to ascertain you’re doing it right and getting the most of SunProtect SPF 30 sunscreen:

Finding the Most Effective Sunscreen Formula

Sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value of 30, gives ~98% protection. Anything above 30 gives a mere additional 1% protection. In other words an SPF of 50+ is basically no more protection than 30SPF, but often tries to fool you with a higher price point!

Besides SPF, it is vital to consider choosing a strong Sunscreen Filter

There are two types of sunscreen filters: Physical Sunscreens and Chemical Sunscreens. Since chemical sunscreens are being phased  in the very near future (due to recent alarming safety concerns and environment impact – learn more) – physical sunscreens made with EWG-approvedZinc Oxide” or “TitaniumDiOxide” are currently the only approved sunblocks containing (GRASE ingredients – Generally Regarded as Safe and Effective) that provides complete protection from UVA (for aging), UVB (for sunburn), and even UVC (for long-term damage)

Important to mention, “old-school” physical sunscreens used to leave a difficult to apply greasy, heavy white cast.  But the new and advanced SunProtect SPF 30+ has 22% Zinc Oxide ground into tiny micron-sized particles [and not ultra-small or nano particles that could penetrate skin and harm marine life]. The fine lotion-like consistency and texture of our @ PVO SunProtect makes it smoother, more easily applied and even works as a great makeup base to achieve a “natural-look”.

Made with all-natural ingredients, SunProtect SPF 30+ is a FACE + BODY sunscreen formula. Safe for even young children,  and is ALSO  a 100% reef-safe sunscreen.  (Did you know that our ocean reefs are being destroyed by chemical sunscreens, and microplastics?)

How Much Sunscreen to Apply

The British Medical Journal recommends the “two-finger approach” for sunscreen application. It says you need an amount equivalent to the lengths of your middle and index fingers to cover your entire face and neck. And before you head on to the beach, an ounce (one shot full) of the lotion should be adequate for an adult.

But the true “quantity test” for each application? –  It is that ‘No patch of the skin goes uncovered, even for a few minutes’.

Our SunProtect is a concentrated natural formula with a blend of SPF+ cold-pressed oils. It spreads easily onto  the skin. A coin-sized amount is good enough to cover your entire face, neck, and decolletage. Use a tablespoon-sized amount for your arms, shoulder, and legs. Use hats and sunglasses for the delicate hairline and eye area.

Using “the dot method”, gently pat your sunscreen instead of rubbing vigorously. This ensures even distribution. Spread in upward, outwards motion until fully blended.

When to Apply Your Sunscreen

Morning Regimen: After applying dosha-specific Cleanser, Hydrator/Toner, and Serum of Choice –Sunscreen should be the last step in your regimen. No wait-time required, SunProtect works instantly.

SunProtect SPF 30+ can also work like a primer under your makeup. It blends, shields, and gives you seamless UV protection regardless of whether your makeup contains SPF or not.

Reapplication: Though Zinc Oxide sunscreens do not degrade as quickly as chemical sunscreens, they can still rub-off or wear away. So, reapply with the same quantity after every 2 hours or after swimming, sweating, wiping your face or towel-drying. SunProtect is water-resistant and lasts for ~80 minutes in water.
