Like Vitamins, Minerals are indispensable for maintaining vibrant skin health. Minerals are a component of every living cell in our body and work synergystically with other vital elements to regulate cellular growth and functioning, both of which greatly impact our overall health and vitality. Although minerals can be obtained from vegetables, nuts and fruits, unfortunately a great deal of the mineral content is lost due to modern day monoculture and non-organic farming techniques. Here at Puraveda Organics, we do not use ingredients which come from over-farmed growers and these ingredients are then minimally processed in order to not lose their Skin Active elements. This ensures that a majority of the mineral content is retained so that your skin gets the full benefit of these Actives.
Zinc is an important element that plays a vital role in natural skin care. Our skin relies on zinc to regulate cellular generation and turnover, as well as healthy functioning of cell membranes. Here are some of the major benefits of Zinc:
- Effective Sunscreen: Zinc Oxide acts as a physical block to prevent harmful UV rays (both UVA and UVB) from penetrating into your skin. Micronized zinc particles in our PVO Sun Protect SPF 30+ are invisible on your skin, non-comedogenic and suitable for all skin types.
- Controls Acne and Oily Skin: Zinc calms inflammatory response in our bodies, and most of us don’t get enough of this mineral. When applied topically at the source of inflammation (such as an acne or wound), it assists enzymes and proteins to accelerate and provides protection against infection. This in turn controls inflammation, reduces redness and generates new cells around the broken skin. Zinc also regulates the skin’s natural oils, preventing pores from getting becoming blocked with comedones, thus heading acne off at the pass!
- Aids Collagen Production: Oxidative stress (the major cause of aging) releases free radicals in the body caused by environmental pollution, too much UV exposure, and smoking, among others. These free radicals interact with skin cells, causing damage to collagen structure. Zinc (as a metallothionein) has the ability to capture and neutralize these free radicals. This reduces intracellular oxidative stress and protects skin lipids and fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen), making it an extremely important element of your skin’s defensive squad.
Sources: Almonds, Sunflower seeds, Sesame seeds, Olives, Soy foods, Legumes and Sea vegetables.
Best for: Anti-aging, Oil control, Sun Protection
Potassium regulates water content in the skin. Thus, low levels of potassium can cause dry skin and trigger other inflammatory responses like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. Potassium is an electrolyte and our cells need it to function normally.
We introduce Potassium in our products in the form of Potassium Sorbate. We extract this compound from Mountain Ash Berries and use it in our products as a natural preservative (an outstanding alternative to parabens!). Potassium Sorbate also provides protection against bacteria, fungi, mold and yeast.
Sources: Mountain Ash Berries, Oranges, Broccoli, Milk, Avocados, Spinach, Coconut Water, Apricots and Pomegranate.
Best for: Pitta (Sensitive) skin control, Acne, Dry Skin.
Did you know? French Green Clay (in our powerful Overnight On the Spot Blemish Treatment formula) is loaded with dozens of mineral content in it, including montmorillonite, dolomite, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, zinc, silicon, aluminium, copper and cobalt!
We use Iron in our products in the form of Iron Oxides. Iron is responsible for increasing the oxygen carrying capacity to our skin cells. Iron-deficient skin appears pale and yellowish in color. The skin also tends to become dry and lacking in natural glow over time. If you’re prone to getting dark circles, then iron deficiency might be the underlying cause. Iron also helps to speed up healing of wounds and scars.
Sources: Almonds, Soy foods, Sesame seeds, Hemp seeds, Flax seeds, Mushrooms, Olives, Coconut, Thyme and Leafy green vegetables.
Best for: Natural glow, Dark circles, Scars.
Magnesium deficiency has been proven to accelerate skin aging. Magnesium plays an important role in DNA repair and replication. This mineral is also responsible for suppressing cortisol (the stress hormone). Better stress management ultimately helps control acne. Magnesium is also a powerful free radical scavenger, and controls inflammation which suppresses wrinkle formation and other signs of skin damage/aging.
Did you know? About 300 biochemical reactions in our body cannot do without Magnesium! However, nearly 80% of the population is deficient in Magnesium!
Magnesium can easily penetrate into the skin when formulated in the form of serums and lotions and give you stated skin benefits. However, if you want to get the full benefit of Magnesium, make sure the product you are using is in a bio-available format, and free of fillers, as many forms sold today don’t actually provide much usable magnesium. Mag Citrate or chelated forms such as Glycinate are your best bets.
Sources: Avocados, Apricots, Almond oil, Spinach, Brazil nuts, Chest nuts and Green veggies such as Spinach.
Best for: Acne and Wrinkles
Selenium is a mineral containing high levels of antioxidants. It’s primary function is the maintenance of skin elasticity and flexibility. It works much like Vitamin E to safeguard cell membrane integrity and forms a protective layer around skin cells due to its antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties, Selenium calms inflamed, irritated skin. This mineral inhibits the production of cytokines (inflammatory molecules) and protects cells from stress-induced damage and collagen breakdown.
Sources: Brazil nuts, Mushrooms, Sunflower seeds, Oats and Soy foods.
Did you know? Recent research has also shown that Selenium can help protect your skin from UV damage (and skin cancer). Selenium also neutralizes toxic elements such as arsenic, cadmium and mercury, all of which have deleterious effects on the body.
Best for: Sun spots/Hyperpigmentation, Sensitivity, Sun Protection
Aside from healthy bones and teeth, Calcium is vital for your skin health as well. Calcium plays an important role in maintaining skin elasticity and firmness by protecting elastin and collagen cells. Deficiency of calcium can result in fragile skin (as well as hair loss and brittle nails!) and skin dehydration. If you are a pregnant or lactating woman, or above age 30, making sure you get enough calcium is important in keeping skin looking younger and maintaining the pH balance of your skin.

Best for: Anti-aging, Skin repairing, Dry Skin.
