Vacation is a time when we forget our strict daily routines and allow ourselves many over-indulgences. While the occasional unwind is great for overall well-being and stress reduction, it can be hard on our skin. Too much sun, extra cocktails, rich restaurant food and desserts combined with late nights and even time zone changes can create serious dosha imbalances. It’s only when we get back home that we realize “party mode” has played havoc with our skin!
Dryness and dehydration, puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, breakouts and blemishes, dullness of the skin and disturbance in the sleep-wake cycle can all be a consequence of air travel or ‘jet-lag’.
While your post-vacation detox won’t be instantaneous, if you follow our tips below, it won’t be long before your glowing pre-vacation skin has returned.
1. Let Your Skin Breathe
Lack of Sleep and Late Nights create cellular inflammation and produce excess cortisol, a stress hormone. Prolonged stress can cause accelerated aging via these processes as well as hormonal shifts which can trigger acne breakouts. Upon return to your normal day-to-day schedule, it’s a good idea to give your skin a break from any toxins. The first few days home from a trip, if possible, avoid makeup and any kind of harsh cleansers or detergents. Use purifying cleansers according to your skin type to detoxify your pores, which can go a long way to avoid blemishes.
Editor’s tip: African black soap and Yucca Root are great sulfate-free alternatives used in natural cleansers.
2. Exfoliate 2-3X per Week
Exfoliation is an important step in getting your skin back in great shape! Exfoliation works by removing dead skin cells and thus helps improve cellular turnover rate..a critical function of younger acting skin. The step not only allows your skin to breathe, but also creates an environment that promotes better uptake of skin actives from your skin care routine for more effective results. Exfoliation with the Papaya & Honey Exfoliation mask and scrub (or, try the SBR version for Pitta Dosha) that contains a blend of finely milled walnut shells and fennel seeds which help to detox, smooth, and re-energize your skin. Exfoliating a few times a week will impart a fresh, polished, even complexion.
3. Replenish your Skin’s Hydration
Low humidity in aircraft cabins, air re-circulation, hotel room dryness and hot/dry weather conditions decrease blood flow to the skin surface creating dehydration of the skin. The condition is equally difficult for oily skin individuals since their skin tends to break out due to excess oil production to compensate the sudden dryness. Follow up your cleansing routine with a suitable hydrator to restore moisture balance and prepare your skin for intense serum treatments.
Editor’s tip: We firmly believe that prevention is better than cure, so we suggest that you spritz the hydrator whenever your skin feels tired or too dry, especially during vacation! Also, don’t forget to use SunProtect SPF30+ whenever you will be exposed to the sun’s UV rays.
4. Intensive Rejuvenation with Serum Treatments
After exfoliation and hydration, it’s time to nourish your skin with proven organic skin actives and intense moisturization. Excessive sugar intake or exposure to the sun cause the development of AGES (cross linked protein fibers associated with aging) and break down the collagen matrix of our skin. Look for replenishing and repairing serums that contain active ingredients such as Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), Matrixyl & Argireline (collagen-building ingredients), Allantoin, Aloe Vera and sebum balancing oils.
Twice daily application of BioScience Peptide Complex is a potent anti-aging therapeutic treatment, with multi-factoral Skin Actives that address fine lines, wrinkles, thinning sagging skin, age spots and hyperpigmentation.
5. Get Rid of Puffiness with Lymphatic Drainage
Stagnation of the lymphatic system can cause post-flight swelling, puffiness (including bags under the eyes), inflammation and edema. The face-lifting technique helps to activate marma or pressure points that enable free flow of energy, drains the lymphatic system and flushes out toxins from our skin cells. (Learn more). Doing a facial massage post-application of a serum or moisturizer allows treatment serums to penetrate more deeply into your skin and provide better results.
6. Restart your Skin Care Routine
The more you delay restarting your normal skin care routine, the more difficult it will be to reverse damage. Never go to bed with make-up on your face and make sure you wash your pillow case a couple times a week, as they are a breeding ground for several acne causing bacteria. Maintenance of a regular skin care regimen (both Day & Night time) is very important to calm skin and promote repair mechanisms.
