Certain skin diseases such as Psoriasis and Rosacea are still date considered to be incurable by medical science. However, both of these can be very effectively managed by ancient Ayurvedic natural practices.
The Ayurvedic Skin Care route to treat Psoriasis lies in the practice of detoxifying the body through an ancient therapy called ‘Panchkarma’. Adequate care and the use of proper skin care products can control and ease the symptoms of this disorder quite effectively.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a genetic/ autoimmune chronic skin condition that results in scaling of skin cells, often developing into dry, thick, red patches. In advanced conditions, these patches can even crack and bleed. These scales can develop anywhere on the body, including the hands, feet, neck, scalp and face.
Did you know? According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), about 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis. The exact etiology of Psoriasis remains unknown, however, it can be triggered by physical trauma, biochemical changes, and immunological factors!
The typical life cycle of a normal skin cell is about a month, during which time cells are produced at the matrix or base, and as they mature, they slowly move to the outer dermal layer and eventually slough off as dead skin cells. However, in psoriatic conditions, the life cycle of these skin cells is accelerated and the entire process occurs within a span of a week. This rapid overproduction results in scaling.
What are the most common symptoms of Psoriasis?
Not all itchy conditions relate to psoriasis. A person with psoriasis may experience one or more of these symptoms:
- Red and inflamed patches of skin.
- Whitish scales or plaques of skin.
- Itching and burning sensation.
- Dry skin that easily cracks.
- Soreness around the patches.
- Cracked area that bleeds.
Is Ayurveda Safe to Treat Psoriasis?
Though medical science is still trying to find a remedy for psoriasis, Ayurvedic treatment of ‘Panchkarma’ has proven to be effective at controlling the symptoms of this skin issue for many. The practice of Panchkarma involves bringing vata-kapha imbalance to equilibrium, and requires you to undergo strict dietary changes and apply only ‘natural’ topical solutions. Since the mode of approach is completely natural, the Ayurvedic treatment for Psoriasis is quite effective and safe.
How Ayurvedic Skin Care works for Psoriasis
The faster you start treating psoriatic skin, the faster it heals. Ayurvedic skin care is based on balancing your out-of-sync skin doshas. According to Ayurvedic texts, psoriasis occurs due to imbalance of two doshas (energy) – ‘Vata’ and ‘Kapha’.
While on one hand, an out of sync Vata dosha causes the dryness and scaling, on the other hand a Kapha energy imbalance can lead to intense itching and rapid skin cell turnover, associated with psoriasis. Both these imbalances eventually lead to toxin (ama) build up in your body, which leads to inflammations and psoriatic breakouts.
Balancing these doshas will require you to end your dependence on toxic synthetic medications and skin treatments, and to also start following a strict diet and modify your lifestyle. This process of detoxification in Ayurveda is known as ‘Panchkarma’ (‘Panch’ = Five and ‘Karma’ = Action) and includes these five staple practices:
- A restricted psoriasis diet.
- Positive lifestyle with less stress, anxiety and depression.
- Switching to natural oils, shampoos and cleansers.
- Increasing the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin E and Vitamin D.
- Use of botanicals like Neem, Flaxseeds, Aloe Vera, Sesame seeds
