For the consumer looking to rid their environment and personal care products of toxins, it’s important to understand this reality..the vast majority of commercial Hair Care products.. even many so-called ‘organic’ ones! contain both Silicones (synthetic polymers with a multitude of ingredient names) and Sulfates, a class of harsh detergent solvents necessary to strip these polymers/ silicones from your hair shaft and scalp, so they don’t build up.
This a vicious cycle… At first, the silicone polymers appear to work miraculously…by coating & filling in the cuticle with what amounts to a type of microscopic plastic sheath on your hair shaft, which is then very difficult to remove. What will remove them is the sulfate chemical detergents (sodium Laureth sulfate is the most common). However, a detergent strong enough to strip these polymers can also strip the outer cuticle layer of your hair, causing it to become rough and break off, (making your hair look dry and frizzy). Then you need more silicones to mask this damage. As you may imagine, this cycle causes considerable deterioration to your hair’s health, strength & appearance over time.
Silicones are even implicated in clogging scalp hair follicles which can cause premature hair drop (thinning)!
As our Teva Hair Care products become more popular, we are seeing increasing numbers of customers having problems removing this silicone buildup when trying to switch to a truly organic product, since most of them have unknowingly been using products containing this group of chemicals. (Unfortunately many products claiming all natural ingredients are not disclosing the silicones and sulfates in their formulas.)
Our shampoos contain Black African Soap bark, a gentle cleansing surfactant, and are not harsh enough to strip the silicones from the hair shaft. We are working on a clarifying shampoo since that is the most effective way of getting rid of this buildup without perpetuating the cycle, but in the interim here is a DIY treatment you can use if you suspect you might have this problem.**
1 Tablespoon baking soda
1-2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Mix all 3 ingredients together (a water bottle works well for this) and allow the baking soda to dissolve. Pour over hair and work through hair & scalp thoroughly for a few minutes and leave on up to 15 minutes before rinsing well. You may now proceed to use one of our truly natural and luxurious shampoos.. and get great results! 🙂
**How to tell if you have silicone build up? If your hair looks oily, matted, frizzy after using one of our shampoos and/or your scalp is itchy and dry or either hair or scalp seem coated with an oily residue, then you can be fairly certain this is what you’re dealing with.
